Christen Rasmussen was born April 5, 1825 in
Lolland, Denmark. He served his time as a soldier before and through the Prussian War. At the close of the war, he heard the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His brother Neils became a local missionary, and his two sisters and his mother also joined the church. His father never did. About 1853, he and his cousin
Jorgen Hansen emigrated to the United States, by way of New Orleans. His mother and younger brother
Jorgen followed a year later. His mother contracted cholera and died there. He settled in
Parowan and became
friendly with the
Mortensen family, as they were they only people he could talk to, as his English was limited. He immediately fell in love with
Mette, but she was too young. He was thirty years old, and he waited for her, and they were married when she turned eighteen.
