Mettie Mortensen was born in Neun, an island of the northern Denmark, on 2 May 1845. She came to the United States as a small girl with her family. It took the family seven and half weeks to cross the ocean. Her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had to leave Denmark because of the family's choice to join the church. Her family walked across the plains to Utah with the Willie Handcart Company. The whole family survived the ordeal and settled in the small Utah town of Parowan. She was the last surviving handcart pioneer to pass away on 5 July 1935.
